Connecting dimmers
With the rise of LED and Smart bulbs, many lights are now dimmable. Whether it's through an app for smart bulbs or a manual dimmer, having control over the brightness and ambiance remains extremely popular.
However, making a light dimmable with a manual dimmer can seem like a daunting and intimidating task to do on your own. That’s why we’ve put together a short step-by-step guide on what you need and how to proceed to make your LED lights dimmable!
In addition to regular dimmers, there are also Smart dimmers like the Ledvion Smart WIFI LED Dimmer. These smart dimmers function the same way but can be controlled via an app, effectively turning your light into a Smart light! It’s important to note that these smart dimmers must be connected to Wi-Fi and that some require a specific app or a Home System to function properly.
Make sure in advance that the dimmer you choose is compatible with the light you want to connect it to. Some LED dimmers, for example, have a range of 3 to 250 Watts, while others may cover 5 to 600 Watts.
What You Need Before You Start
Before connecting a dimmer, it’s a good idea to have the following tools ready:
A dimmer
A voltage tester
A screwdriver
A wire stripper or pliers
Got everything ready? Then you can follow these steps!
Step 1: Turn Off the Power
The most crucial step in any electrical project at home is to turn off the power. Check which circuit your light is connected to and switch it off via the breaker panel. If you want to be extra safe, turn off the main switch. Safety always comes first, and you can never be too careful!
Step 2: Remove the Frame
With the power off, you can now safely proceed to the second step: removing the switch button and the frame of the light you want to make dimmable. You can do this by simply prying off the button with a screwdriver. Then, remove the frame by first detaching the metal part, followed by the plastic frame in the same way.
Step 3: Remove the Switch & Check for Voltage
Now that the frame is removed, you can pull the switch out of the wall. It should be connected to a black and a brown wire. Use a voltage tester to double-check that the power is completely off. If you still detect voltage, go back to Step 1 and make sure you have turned off the correct circuit.
Step 4: Prepare the Wires
Now you can safely detach the wires and remove the regular switch. These wires will later go into the dimmer. It’s important to determine whether they need to be clamped or screwed into the new switch. If they need to be screwed in, you may require slightly longer wires, so double-check if this will work.
At the same time, make sure the wires are not too long to avoid exposed wiring. The dimmer packaging should indicate the correct wire length. Cut or strip the wires to the appropriate length.
Step 5: Connect & Reinstall the Dimmer
Now you can safely connect the wires! It is crucial to place the correct wire into the correct terminal.
The brown phase wire should go into the terminal marked with an "L".
The black wire should go into the other terminal, which is marked with a wave symbol (∿).
Once the wires are securely connected, place the dimmer back into the wall box.
Tighten everything, push the frame back into place, and unscrew the switch ring. Now, attach the dimmer cover and screw the ring back on. Push the knob onto the dimmer, switch the power back on, and your dimmable LED light is ready to use!
