Sustainable and energy-saving lighting

Sustainable and Energy-Saving Lighting

It’s more relevant than ever: saving energy. With energy bills higher than ever, now is the time to switch to sustainable lighting if you haven’t already done so. And unlike installing solar panels, saving energy on lighting doesn’t have to be expensive! But how can you best tackle this? At Lightexpert, we are happy to help you on your way.

Switch to LED

The first and most efficient way to save energy is by switching to LED lighting wherever possible. While initially, energy-saving bulbs and incandescent bulbs were replaced with LEDs, this can now also apply to halogen bulbs, fluorescent tubes, and system fixtures. For example, replacing a halogen bulb with a GU10 LED can reduce your energy consumption by up to 90%. Using LED panels or LED fluorescent tubes instead of regular fluorescent tubes can save you up to 50%.

Make Use of Dimmers and Sensors

Dimmers are incredibly useful and actually nothing new these days. However, that doesn’t take away from the fact that they are great tools for saving energy. In addition to changing the atmosphere in a room, using a dimmer also lowers the power consumption of your light. If you set your dimmer to around 75% of normal, your light will only use 75% of the power.

Sensors go one step further than dimmers. They ensure that the connected light only turns on and off under certain conditions. This can be a specific amount of daylight, so the light turns on when it starts to get dark or when there is movement in front of the sensor. This way, your light will only turn on when you need it and will automatically turn off when it’s no longer needed.

Save with Smart Lights

Smart lights can be seen as the next level of dimmers and sensors. By using a smart light, you can add the functionality of a dimmer to your light without actually having a dimmer. This happens via a smart app that connects your smart lights to Wi-Fi. You can group them together, change the light colors, and even set schedules. Don’t have smart lighting? You can use a Smart Plug to make your non-smart devices smart. Just like smart lighting, you use Wi-Fi to control the plug via the app. While it won’t magically change your regular LED light to another color, you can control it remotely, set schedules, and check your usage.

Keep Track of Your Usage

The last way to save is mainly a matter of keeping an eye on your own consumption. Do you leave your lights on unnecessarily, even with a dimmer? Then just turn them off. After all, 0% usage is always better than 20% or 30%.

It is also still the case that lights consume more power when you turn them on than when they have been on for a while. So, if you need to quickly go in and out of a room, it’s better to leave the light on rather than turning it off and on again in just a few seconds.

At Home and at the Office

Of course, energy saving is not only relevant at home. It’s also smart to save energy in a business setting. Replacing an entire office floor of fluorescent tubes with UGR<19 LED panels can quickly cut half of the energy bill for that floor.

These UGR<19 LED panels are particularly suitable for creating a focused work environment because they never emit harsh light and diffuse the light evenly across the workspace.

Additionally, investing in good, energy-saving lighting is part of qualifying for the EIA scheme, which stands for Energy Investment Deduction. This scheme rewards companies that invest in energy-saving measures with tax benefits.
