The New Energy Label 2021 - How Does It Work Now?

The energy label shows how efficiently lamps and other products, such as electrical appliances, use energy. The higher the energy efficiency class, the more energy and thus electricity an electrical device uses. Since September 1, 2021, a new energy label has been introduced. In this blog, we explain what the label now shows and what you should pay attention to.

Energy Label Updated on September 1, 2021

According to the new energy labeling regulation (EU) 2019/2015 (abbreviated ELR), as of September 1, 2021, nearly all LED lamps, fluorescent lamps, and energy-saving bulbs have received a new energy label. The new scale ranges from A (dark green) to G (red). The most energy-efficient label is "A," and the least energy-efficient is "G." This makes it much easier to choose an energy-efficient lamp.

Before September 1, 2021, the label ranged from A++ to E. The old scale did not provide clear information because many products received the A++ label, making it confusing for consumers. Many lamps were already at the highest level. The transition to a new energy label does not mean that the lamps are now less energy-efficient. The new label allows more space for even more energy-efficient lamps.

To create space for new, highly efficient lamps, the most energy-efficient class (A) remains as empty as possible. Products with labels B, C, or D are roughly comparable to the old A+ or A++ label. So, don’t be alarmed if you have bought a lamp that, on the new scale, only receives a D. This product is definitely not less energy-efficient. It’s exactly the same; it’s just that energy consumption is being assessed more strictly, and the product receives a lower energy class.

Dual Labels Until March 2023

Until March 1, 2023, you will encounter products in (online) stores that have both the old and the new energy label. This is because replacing all the packaging takes a lot of work. Often, the new label is included in the product packaging. From March 2023 onward, it will be mandatory to replace all energy labels.

Want to know if you have an old or new energy label?

Old and new energy label

  • Check if there is a QR code on the label. A new energy label includes a QR code: when you scan it, you’ll be directed to a product database with information about the product.

  • The new scale ranges from class A to G. A lamp with a label B, C, or D is one of the most energy-efficient lamps currently available.

  • The old scale ranged from A++ to E. So, if you wanted an energy-efficient lamp in the past, you would have chosen the A++ label. A+, A++, and A+++ (the plus classes) no longer exist with the new label.

How is the new energy efficiency class determined?

The new energy label is based on a new calculation. For each product, we define in lumens the amount of light emitted per watt of power. This efficiency, expressed in lumens per watt, enables comparison between products.

The new energy efficiency value is illustrated in the table below:
