What is the IP rating of a lamp?

What is the IP rating of a lamp?

The IP rating of a lamp indicates how well it is protected against solid objects, dust, or moisture. This is particularly useful to know when looking for a lamp for areas such as the bathroom.

In our shop, all lamps have their IP rating listed in the product specifications. But before you can interpret these ratings correctly, it’s important to understand what they mean.

Understanding IP Ratings

IP ratings for lamps consist of two digits. The first digit represents the level of protection against solid objects or dust, while the second digit indicates the level of protection against moisture or water. Below, you can find the most common IP ratings and their corresponding protection levels:

  • IP20: Dustproof

  • IP21: Drip-proof

  • IP23: Rainproof

  • IP44: Splash-proof (suitable for areas around the bath or shower)

  • IP54: Splash-proof / Dust-resistant

  • IP65: Jet-proof

  • IP67: Dustproof / Submersible for up to 30 minutes (for use in the bath or shower)

  • IP68: Dustproof / Suitable for continuous underwater use

Bathroom Lighting

So, which type of lamp can you use in the bathroom? The best way to determine this is by considering specific zones that indicate the level of moisture or water exposure. These zones are defined in a way that helps you choose the right lighting for your bathroom.

Each of these zones requires lamps with a minimum IP rating. Below, you can find the recommended IP ratings for each zone:

  • Zone 1: Requires a minimum of IP45

  • Zone 2: Requires a minimum of IP44

  • Zone 3: Requires a minimum of IP21
